How do I stop firefox from opening a blank tab everytime I download a file?

I work from home so I open an attachment from my email for each customer I service. However, It's become a large inconvenience when doing this in Firefox. Every time I hit download from the Firefox preview page, Firefox opens a new blank tab. How do I stop this from happening? I'm wasting a lot of precious time having to close extra tabs every time I download a document.
