I am going to be closing my email host very soon but want to keep some of my emails. I already have these emails in my local folders. Does this mean they are saved on my computer and I will be able to view them even when my email account is closed down? If not is there any way of saving them.

Yes local folders is a safe place to put mail for local storage. It is not affected by the closing or removal of an account from Thunderbird.
