Why do some incoming emails end up in All Mail but not in my Inbox?

Recently I have noticed some incoming emails turn up in my All Mail folder but do not appear in my Inbox - just a handful (not all gmail addresses, either) but I'm worried about missing some emails. I'd be grateful for some advice.

Chosen solution

Is there any possibility that they have been moved into another folder, perhaps by a spam filter, Thunderbird's Junk Controls, or your own filters, either in Thunderbird or at your server?

At this point , I cannot say this is definitely a Thunderbird issue.

It sounds like you are using an imap mail account as you mention 'All Mail'. Thunderbird has a remote view of subscribed folders and therefore shows what is on the server.

Gmail stores everything in the 'All Mail' folder, so in that aspect, locating your emails in that folder is okay.

However, gmail also stores mail that was deleted in the 'All Mail' folder unless it was placed in the gmail Trash Bin. Gmail also uses the 'All Mail' folder s an archive, so archived mail also end up in 'All Mail'.

Gmail will also auto label and put emails into other folders eg: 'Important'. Please read this:

I missed emails because gmail had auto labelled several emails with eg: Important or one it's special folders. I do not use those folders, therefore had not subscribed to see them. So check to see if gmail is doing this.

Also check to see if you have emails filtered but not labelled to show in Inbox. I located this query on a google support, so double check this is not happening to you.

If one of those emails was from a close friend, you could ask them to resend it and watch what occurs when it is received in the gmail webmail account which you access using a browser. Basically, you need to rule out whether gmail doing some filtering, labelling, moving etc.

If you have created Message Filters in Thunderbird, double check them as well.

Thanks both - I discovered that the 'missing' emails have been going to the 'Important' folder (which I never look at) so I have gone into Gmail and turned off the tags and filters. Hopefully this will sort the problem.

Thanks again

Good to hear you have located those emails.
