When I downloaded firefox, I pushed a button - no idea what I did - and now the firefox icon with the "eject firefox" is all across my MacBook desktop - this info was part of the "how to" from firefox - how do I get rid of this and get back my old desktop?

See the step #4 on this set of instructions http://mzl.la/1xKrRru

After dragging Firefox to the Applications folder, hold down the control key while clicking in the window and select Eject "Firefox" from the menu.

Also refer to attached image for visual understanding.
