I am concerned as I like to subscribe to fitness websites and Firefox works well for these, Safari doesn't. I want to know that it is secure when I use these sites.

hi, firefox will soon drop support (which means no security updates or other fixes) for os x 10.6-10.7, so you should update you operating system on the device: http://www.apple.com/osx/how-to-upgrade/ https://blog.mozilla.org/futurereleases/2016/04/29/update-on-firefox-support-for-os-x/

The ESR suggestion is the Firefox 45 ESR. Unless it gets extended the last update will be 45.8.0esr at same time of Firefox 53.0 Release. It is basically the Firefox 45.0 Release with security updates.
