In T'bird 45.1.0, the Change Quote and Reply Format extension prevents entering text into a message (and blanks out the From selection).
I just upgraded to 45.1.0 from 38.x (two installations -- one for work, the other personal). The work installation had no problem, but with the personal installation, when bringing up a new message, the From widget contained nothing, and the body of the message was empty (both when replying and starting a new message). I couldn't get a cursor, and typing produced nothing.
I found that message composition worked fine in safe mode. By selectively disabling add-ons, I found that the culprit is the Change quote and reply format extension (which is only in my personal installation). Fortunately, the extension is a nicety rather than a necessity.
Perhaps a fix to the extension, or a change in the main code, will solve the problem.
Many thanks for an invaluable tool of my work and personal online experience!
BTW, I'm an experienced developer, so might be able to help diagnose or debug "under the covers", with a little coaching.

Hi There,
I am facing this issue for almost all users whom I am supporting. I have installed latest version for Thunderbird 45 but issue is not fixed. After PC restart, it is again behaving the same way and gets disabled. Users when click on reply, they just see blank in a reply Window. Same is happening when they write a new email and can not send it.
Could you please let me know how can I fix this issue?
Warm Regards,
Abhay

Please check to see if you are running the latest version as I notice a couple of updates have been made to make compatible with TB version 45.
Yep, that fixed it. Should have noticed that; thanks much.

abhvp: re : I have installed latest version for Thunderbird 45 but issue is not fixed. But you do not say whether you are using the correct version of Change Quote and Reply addon extension.
To work with TB version 45.0 onwards, the one you need is: 0.8.7.1 version
Hello,
Add-on version is 0.8.7.1 and I am still convincing my users that issue is from TB side.
Can you please let me know what I need to do now?
Warm Regards,
Abhay
Start Thunderbird in SAfe Mode Help > Restart with addons disabled
Does it work ok in Safe Mode?
Do you use 'Conversations' addon extension?
Hi There,
Thank you for your response. I tried safe mode. It works. But user is non-technical and they do not know and do not want to use safe mode. I do not have Conversations addon extensions.
For all users when I used safe mode, it worked. But after system restart Thunderbird had issues.
Warm Regards,
Abhay
If it works in Safe mode, the first thing to try is to disable one addon extension at a time and test the function, to see which one is causing a conflict. Report back on results.
Hi There,
I tried to disable each add-on and found that it just works till I restart user PC. After user PC is restarted, the problem occurs again. This problem occurs even if I disable add-on and restart PC.
We are not reverting users to Thunderbird V 24. Could you please let me know if there is some configuration glitch in TB for the same?
Warm Regards,
Abhay
If you have the "Change Quote and Reply Format" extension, check that you have the latest rev installed. That solved the problem for me. The version I installed was 0.8.7.1. You'll see the discussion about it above.
Hi Dwig,
I have already installed latest version of this add-in and still facing the issue. This is not for particular client that I have, but it is for all clients across the globe.
Warm Regards,
Abhay
re :I tried to disable each add-on and found that it just works till I restart user PC. I require better feedback. If you started in Safe Mode and it worked ok then one of the addons is causing the issue. So you restart the computer and it will restart in normal mode, so obviously it will not work because you have not identified which of your addons is causing the issue. So you access 'Tools' > 'Addons' OR 'Menu icon' > 'Addons'. disable one addon and see if it works. repeat disabling one addon at a time until it works.
If it worked whilst disabling addons, you need to tell me which one you disabled that made it work.
I asked if you were using 'Conversations' ...are you using 'Conversations' addon ? If yes, does disabling it resiolve the issue.
Yes, it took me a while sifting through the above, but this was my sequence of events:
tools -- addons
There, I could see the previously installed addon, "Change quote and reply format" Clicked on "More" and got a page: "Change quote and reply format". Clicked on the home page URL, freeshell.de . . . . Scrolled down to
"CHANGE QUOTE AND REPLY FORMAT (ex changequote): it's an extension that changes the format of reply mails. latest : 0.8.7.1 version (TB - compatible 1.0 or higher)"
Clicked "download"
Then I had to remind myself how to actually install an add on:
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/installing-addon-thunderbird
The add on was thus installed successfully, and I now, thankfully have proper reply formats.
Time wasted? About an hour. Wondering why this is not a standard feature in Thunderbird, as it is in more mainstream email systems, but appreciative that the necessary repair info was available and comprehensible.
