When I try to setup a yahoo email account (using imap) I get a bad username/password message (they are correct). Any ideas?

Access to my yahoo mail account has always been a bit spotty but recently it's flat out refused to work. I was getting the message "login to server imap.mail.yahoo.com failed". What I've tried so far:

1) The username had been listed as username@yahoo.com--I tried changing this to just my username to no avail.

2) I deleted my account in Thunderbird and tried recreating it.

         a) the first time I used the auto configuration option, but it didn't work
         b) the second time I used the manual configuration and changed my username from username@yahoo.com to just username

In both cases I got the error message "Configuration could not be verified-is the username or password wrong?" I use 1Password to store all my passwords, so I'm cutting and pasting it right into the dialog box so I know it's right (I also tried typing it in just in case the cut and paste somehow corrupted it).

3) Just for the heck of it, I went into my router and disabled the firewall there, but to no avail.

4) When I ping imap.mail.yahoo.com from the command line there are no problems/dropped packets.

I'm running Windows 10 (with auto-update so it should be the current patch release) and I just upgraded Thunderbird to 45.1.0. I've searched these forums and googled the problem (which is where I learned about the username vs username@yahoo.com issue). Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Chosen solution

That error message could be caused if any of the settings are different from the ones given here, and if those don't work, use the full address for the user name, as recommended by Yahoo.

Another reason could be if you have two-step verification in place.

Also, in case it's a factor, disable any ant-virus programs while you set up the account, and afterwards disable email scanning, or create an exception for the TB profile folder.

It's beyond me (seems stupid), but I had to set "Allow apps that use less secure sign in" at https://login.yahoo.com/account/security
