Drafts not deleting after message sent

After writing my message and hitting send, the message (as it should do) appears in the sent box. However the message also still appears in the drafts folder and is marked as unread. I would assume, perhaps wrongly, that once the message is sent and transferred to the sent folder it would be deleted from the drafts folder. Any help on this problem would be greatly appreciated. I am using Thunderbird 45.0 under Windows 10, if you require any further info please get in touch. Thanks
