I can't find a message reported on my inbox, permanently
I have two annoying but not serious problems. Firstly, a few days ago my inbox started displaying an asterix alongside the number of incoming messages and secondly my inbox tells me that I have one message which has not been viewed but I cannot find it anywhere and even right clicking the list and selecting "mark folder as read" will not clear it. Thanks for any help. Peter Collard (Hydking)

I have included the picture again, in case something went wrong last time
The was nothing wrong with the image last time.
but the picture I have on file shows all the folders.
It doesn't show any subfolders underneath Inbox. Compare that with 'Local Folders'. Subfolders underneath 'Local Folders' are visible. You need to expand Inbox by clicking the little triangle in front of it.

inbox started displaying an asterix alongside the number of incoming messagesasterix? The asterisk means the number shown is a summation of the folder, plus the contents of all its subfolders.

The message may be in a subfolder of Inbox. Check your folders underneath Inbox.
Sounded possibly promising, although I have not noticed any further messages in sub folders. I have been through all the apparent subfolders listed and even marked them all "mark folder as read" but the problem is still there, both the asterix and the unread indication. Maybe at the end of the day, I will have to re-install Thunderbird and see if that cures it, but at the moment I would rather avoid that. Many thanks for you efforts, I will keep my fingers crossed for alternatives. Peter
Maybe ... I will have to re-install Thunderbird and see if that cures it,
It won't. The Thunderbird program and the profile with all your mail are separate. The problem is clearly in your profile. So you'd just waste your time.
Can you post a screenshot of your folder pane with all Inbox subfolders visible? http://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-do-i-create-screenshot-my-problem
Hi, screenshot attached, also have had an error message, saying a mail could not be delivered (I accidentally replied to your last email) and that has increased the mystery emails to two. Oh what a wondeful life!!
I have just come across a possible reason for the problem, which poses another problem. I have just noticed that there is a sub folder missing from my listing, under my inbox and my screen has just flashed up an incoming mail, which would normally be sorted to that subfolder, but as the subfolder is not there, I cannot find the message. So, that now poses the question, how do I recover the subfolder, am I being a right pain? Kind regards,
Peter Collard

That isn't very useful yet. Again, can you post a screenshot of your folder pane with all Inbox subfolders visible?
I accidentally replied to your last email
This is a web forum, not a mailing list. You cannot reply via email.

Do you see the error message in your Inbox?
Modified
There is no error message in my inbox. The problem appears to be that one of the sub folders to my inbox seems to have been deleted a few days ago and I did not notice until a message came in this morning for that sub folder. It appeared briefly on my desktop, enough for me to register it mentally and note what it was about, and then when I went to my emails, it was not there and the number of missing messages in my inbox had increased to two. (the missing message would have been sorted to the missing sub folder). So, my guess is that the sub folder has been deleted and the original missing message has also been sorted to that missing sub folder, but still appears on the inbox listing and I can't find it because it is in the missing sub folder. Question, is it possible to recover that missing sub folder, which could well be the answer to my original problem? Peter
my guess is that the sub folder has been deleted
Please post a screenshot of Windows Explorer showing the folder for your go-plus.net account. Expand all subfolders so that they are visible in the screenshot.
Indicate whether the 'missing' folder is visible, and if so, which one it is.
Hi, As far as I can tell, my earlier screenshot included all the folders and sub folders on my email account under "collard@go-plus.net". I have included the picture again, in case something went wrong last time but the picture I have on file shows all the folders. The folder that is missing is a sub folder of the main inbox and was labelled "tennis" as I am chairman of the local tennis club.

Hi, You're a star, problem solved. As you have probably guessed, I am not too familiar with Thunderbird, although I have managed most things but I didn't register the little triangle and what it does. I can only assume that I accidentally clicked it and hid the tennis folder without realising. Many thanks for your assistance.
