Have tried deleting the mailing list from the all address books. The delete menu item is not greyed out, but will not delete the mailing list. Have tried deleting individuals from the list and when I go back they are all back. The delete option is greyed out.

Chosen solution

Zeno suggested opening the actual address book that contains the Mailing List. Tried that but still couldn't delete the mailing list. Finally, I clicked on the actual address book and the delete menu item was not greyed out. I clicked on it and it deleted the address book and all of the other submenus and the mailing list.

I found out it was a Mac OS X address book. I deleted it but it is still there under the file menu and by clicking on it, it is put back onto the address book sidebar. So it seems to be a Mac issue and not a thunderbird issue.
