Having found the settings. Can we consider this topic "solved"? Or is there more. (steak knives perhaps)

Where have you looked? Each account has a settings page clearly marked "Server Settings".
You may find what you are trying to do rather hard with accounts that connect using IMAP, since modern implementations of this protocol allow the server to push messages to the client, rather than waiting for the client to ask for new messages. Taking Thunderbird offline may be the most effective solution.
I am not using imap - I came from two directions, tools and the drop down. Both got me to account settings but there was nowhere to get to server settings.
Seems if it is going to happen it will happen to me
I still don't know where you're looking.
Modified
Another approach would be to remove the passwords for this account. Then it can't connect, but will offer you a nagging screen for you to enter them, which you'll have to dismiss.
My communication link is down on the computer Thunderbird. I will get screen prints as soon as I can get the %^~>*€,>£^} system working.
Is it possible that I am many releases behind or does the program check for updates when the system comes up?? I have never initiated a update, but the installation is not that old.
Steve
The screens Zenos posted have remained substantially the same since V1 so even if your version is old you should still have them
I think there is a problem here that exist between chair and keyboard.
Could not get a reply screen earlier. Probably have this posted too many places. I did find the server setting - can not figure out how I missed it.
When I hit it, I get server with this name already exists. There are two servers out there with this name, but they both give me the same response. How do I delete the one wioth no mail in it and will that allow me to change server settings?
Sorry fopr being such a PITA. Brain just not engaged
This is exactly the data I need to file a bug..... Can you please email me the prefs.js file from your profile folder. This file contains your account settings, but no passwords.
My email unicorn dot consulting at gmail dot com
locate the file by;
On the toolbar > Help > Troubleshooting information and pressing the show folder button.
I did not know how to sent it to you so I just did a copy into this box. Hope that does it. The account with nothing in it is a partial of my ATT account which is rarely used. I can get the infop and fix that now that I know where it is.
You are doing great!!!

Surely having the same email address set up against two apparently different servers is asking for trouble? Even if it's technically legitimate, that is, it's one and the same mail provider behind the two accounts, having a mail client making two concurrent connections to the same server is just not useful or sensible.

Actually with the benefit of the prefs file Zenos I can say it is only the names that are the same. The top account has ATT settings I can also say our OP does not know when the deed was done to make them the same.
Of significance to me anyway. With his Prefs.js file I was able to change the account name from the user interface without any fuss. While changing to say account setting creates an error. Changing the name does not. I have given some terrible advice about this error in the past by not understanding it.
