Though I can see the inbox and all my folders in the overview to the left, I can't see and access the single e-mails in these folders. The right hand side of the screen shows me an unusual overview and when I click there, nothing happens. But, I can access e-mails via the search funtion. I also can't send e-mails. I've closed and re-started Thunderbird and my computer several times and also tried to update Thunderbird, but no changes.

Please see also the screenshot.

Thanks in advance for tips and advice!

Start Thunderbird in safe mode. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Safe_mode Uninstall Lightning via the Add-Ons Manager. Restart Thunderbird. Re-install Lightning if it's needed.

I tried different ways of starting Thunderbird in safe mode, but unfortunately none worked. Couldn't start in safe mode and therefore couldn't do the next steps.

What's so difficult following the instructions from the article? If you're having difficulties, where exactly do you get stuck? Please be specific.

I tried 3 ways described in the lin to start safe mode: 1. via Thunderbird/Help/restart with add ons disabled - nothing happened. 2. Then I tried via windows 'shift' and double click Thunderbird -> nothing happened. 3. And then via Windows key + R -> nothing happened

Windows key + R brings up the run box here with Win7. If it doesn't work for you ask in a Windows forum.

I don't think it's a Windows problem.

I followed the instructions on how to start Thunderbird in safe mode, not Windows. Option 3 also meant to start Thunderbird in safe mode.

I followed the instructions as quoted here:

'As an alternative method, press "Windows key Image:Windows_Key.png + R" on the keyboard to open a Run dialog (or click "Start → Run..." on Windows XP) and enter the following in the Run box: For Thunderbird, one of these:

       thunderbird -safe-mode
       "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\thunderbird.exe" -safe-mode '

You implied you cannot bring up the Run box. If so, this is a Windows problem.

If the Run box comes up, what exactly is the problem? In case it isn't obvious, you'll need to enter the path to thunderbird.exe where it is installed on your system.

Sorry for not being specific. Yes, the run box opens and I copied in the above. When I then press okay, nothing happens.

I don't understand what you mean by 'to enter the path to thunderbird.exe where it is installed on your system'. Do I need to do anything here (see screenshot)?

Christ1 means you need to enter "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\thunderbird.exe" -safe-mode

...so long as your Thunderbird is installed in the default location.

But the path as shown in your last screen shot is slightly different.

Select the Thunderbird executable, try right-click and "copy path" and use that in place of the part inside the quotation marks.
