I want to not use Thunderbird to access the internet.
At install, I was asked if I wanted to access the internet inside Thunderbird. I said yes. Right now, I cannot access it at all. I have to copy any URL then go to a browser. I want to stop having to do this. I want to access the internet via my browser without any interference from Thunderbird.

Please explain that in more detail. It would be news to me that Thunderbirds prompts you for accessing the Internet.
Right now, I cannot access it at all.
Yet you managed to post your question here.

Please explain in detail
- what you're doing
- what happens
- what you expect to happen

Believe it or not, if Thunderbird couldn't connect to the Internet, you wouldn't receive or send a single message.

Install and use the related Mozilla Firefox if you would like a web browser.
- see mozilla.org/firefox/products
- Obtain installer from getfirefox.com

Why is it that support people think every person asking for help is stupid. I have 2 Ph.D.'s and one is in computer design. Of course I can access the internet. It is called a browser. (How does it feel to be treated stupidly?).
When I get an email with a hot link to a website, I could (please note, past tense) left click and it would open the site in Thunderbird (an original choice when I installed an update to the program some moons ago). If I wanted (past tense) to do it in the browser (Safari or Firefox), I used right click.
Now, it won't work, left or right click. Hence my question.
MacBook Pro with OS X El Capitan 10.11.3 and Thunderbird 38.6.0

At the risk of making you feel stupid again, Thunderbird isn't a web browser. Therefore any link you click within Thunderbird is supposed to open in a browser. You did not explain why you'd expect links to open in Thunderbird.
(an original choice when I installed an update to the program some moons ago).
You chose not to explain that when being asked about this before. Therefore once again, please explain that in more detail.
Did you used to use, past tense, Thunderbrowse? http://thunderbrowse.com
