I cannot exit fullscreen in thunderbird 35.5.1 for linux

The minimize, maximize and exit buttons in the top right corner have disappeared. I am using Linux Mint 17.

In the XFCE desktop that I use the key combination is alt + space: this brings up a menu to restore the normal maximised window with the buttons visible. I don't know what the key combo is for Cinnamon, I guess it's in the user guide somewhere?
