I am trying to move all my contacts from an old computer to a new computer. Both are windows 10 and both have Thunderbird installed. I am slightly technology-challenged, so please have patience with me. I'm sure I am making this harder than it is.

The recommended way to do this would be to copy a set of files known as your profile. For Windows users, there is a tool designed to make this easy.

While it is also possible to copy just your address books from one machine to another, this is a slightly more fiddly procedure. But if moving your entire profile doesn't suit your needs, ask again and someone will guide you through address book export and import.
