38.5.0 is extremely slow, both in downloading (5-6 second per email) and uploading emails. MS Mail runs fast, so is not the internet or my computer.

Ever since 38.5 downloaded my email has been slow. Really slow. I thought at first it was holiday traffic or maybe my server, but I have tried MS Mail and that works fine.

Please explain 'slow' in more detail. What are you doing, and what happens?

When downloading email, it will take as long as 5 - 6 seconds per email - and most of these are fairly brief emails. When uploading, it may take 5 or more seconds to connect with server, then an additional 15 or so seconds to actually transmit the message.

The same actions used to take place in just a few seconds total. On weekdays I receive about 15 emails in the morning. This used to take about 2-4 seconds total. And that's about how long it's taking Windows Live Mail to do it now. Thunderbird is now taking as much as a minute to download those initial emails now.

Actions like saving a draft are instantaneous. Activities that don't involve the internet take place quickly.

I downloaded 38.5 again and reinstalled. I have just gone through my AVG E-Mail check to see if changing any of those helps, but it wasn't interfering with earlier versions of thunderbird.

Try to disable whatever is AVG attempting to check wrt email. Also create an exception for the Thunderbird profile directory, so that the real-time scanner won't scan it. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Thunderbird

Have done all that and it still runs slow. No change, at all.

Slow, as in 30 + seconds per email, sometimes up to 1 minute or more. For simple messages < 250 words, no pictures or attachments. Both downloading and uploading.

Lost patience with the issue - when I updated my MS Office I went the 365 route and now use Outlook. Maybe not as "personal" feeling, but it works fast.
