Two windows open when I start program

When I open the program it opens 2 windows. Either works fine but if I close one then the other closes as well. I realize that someone else asked this and it was marked 'solved' but the solution on that thread will not work in my case. It was suggested that I close ONE of the windows using the 'x' and then use the file menu to exit the other one. Since closing either closes both I cannot even try this. I did try several times to close only one of the windows but it seems that it's both or neither. This only began happening this week so I know it's probably something I did or a result of an update or something. Still, having two windows when I only need one is a problem. I hope someone can offer a different solution than the one in the other thread.

Chosen solution

I finally got annoyed with it and just rebooted the entire system. That seems to have fixed it for now. Thanks for trying to help though. Maybe it won't crop up again.

Hi paminala, is the problem with Thunderbird or with Firefox?

How are you starting the program, for example, double-clicking a desktop icon or single-clicking a toolbar icon?

It's Thunderbird (the email program) and I'm clicking the toolbar icon.

If you arrange the two windows side by side, can you see any difference between them? Do they both show the same Inbox?

I don't have Thunderbird on this computer for comparison, but if you right-click the toolbar icon, then check Properties, Shortcut tab, does the "Target" show anything unusual? Typically it's just the full path to the program, for example:

"C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\thunderbird.exe"

Is there any text after that?

Actually they don't show the same inbox (weird.) I have a few email accounts linked to this one program. A window is opening for each of two of them (but not the other so that's strange.)

The 'target' for that icon says: "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\thunderbird.exe"

Can you close one window independently of the other using either of these keyboard shortcuts:

  • Ctrl+w
  • Ctrl+F4
