I assume this is for a backup. I suggest you use this add-on https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/importexporttools/ as it allows mails to be exported as EML files. safer and more portable that the Thunderbird default mbox format.

Sadly Matt. This does not run on my PC HP Pavilion All-in-One 64 bit Windows 8.1

Appmenu > add-ons On the toolbar then  Add-ons

in the search box on the right type import and press enter and install it that way
