I just reset my Windows 10 and now I can't connect to my gmail account. I downloaded the newest version of Thunderbird, and I keep getting the enclosed error windows.

Chosen solution

I found the server names

The Thunderbird New Account Wizard automatically fills in the correct server settings for Gmail. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/automatic-account-configuration

I have no idea how you ended up with .gmail.com as server name, which obviously won't work.

Did you attempt the Manual Configuration?

I can't remember my user name because at Google, you use your gmail address to sign.

All you need to do is to fill in your name, email address, and password. Let the wizard do everything else.

I did find a message at the gmail site about an app with inadequate security trying to connect to my account.

That happens when in your Thunderbird account settings 'Authentication method' is not set to 'OAuth2', and you didn't allow 'less secure apps' in your Gmail settings.

Note, 'OAuth2' only works for IMAP accounts. The wizard defaults to IMAP. In case you want to set up a POP account, you'd still need to allow 'less secure apps' in your Gmail settings prior to setting up the account in Thunderbird. https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/6010255?hl=en

You need to type the entire server name in that field. The buttons labeled IMAP and SMTP are to select the server type. They do not substitute for filling out the complete name.

I was going to leave an obscene message, but I decided to give you one more chance. I found the server names, but I can't remember my user name because at Google, you use your gmail address to sign. All of the variations I tried just resulted in a message about failing to connect. However, I did find a message at the gmail site about an app with inadequate security trying to connect to my account. If you can help me get reconnected to gmail, I'll keep using Thunderbird.

The automatic configuration isn't working. The first time, I manually set all of the fields, using port numbers I found at the gmail site, but I set the authentication fields wrong. After I got your message, I just set the server names and the IMAP port number, and Thunderbird set the rest, but it set the authentication fields wrong. Once I set those, I was connected, after a mere 12 hours of trying everything I could think of, and failing. Also, the Windows mail app connected automatically, so the problem seems to be somewhere other than my connection to my ISP.
