Can I set up Thunderbird so that the folder bar on the left stays put (doesn't auto-scroll) when I change tabs to a different open folder?

I have a lot of folders, so the folder pane on the left scrolls. I always have open tabs for my "inbox" and "sent", and sometimes one or two other topic folders. When I move from one open/tab folder to another, the folder pane auto-scrolls to that folder. I can't think of any reason that would be a good thing, but I find it annoying for an operation I do daily.

A thread that I am going to save belongs in a topic folder. Typically, I would be in the inbox folder, and scroll the folder pane down to the topic folder. If I have an exchange (a received message and my reply) to add to that folder, I move one (or more) messages from the inbox tab to the topic folder, then click to the sent folder tab to move messages from there to the topic folder. WHOOPS! The folder pane has scrolled back up to the sent folder. I didn't want that; I wanted it to stay put at the topic folder. I have to scroll back down to the topic folder.

If you select to view a folder then it will show in the left folder pane that you have selected that folder and it's contents should display in the right pane. Even if you have the folder contents displaying in a different tab, it is still a folder which you have selected to view when you select that folder tab and so will be shown in the Folder Pane. Folders and Folder Pane and 'Mail Toolbar' are all in one tab.

However, I understand your predicament about the scrolling and the folder you require using as a move to being out of view.

There are a few ideas /suggestions you could try to see if there is a better way of achieving what you are doing.

If you have already moved some emails from eg: Inbox to to the topic folder and then you select the 'Sent' folder or Sent tab. The following method means you do not even need to locate the 'topic' folder in the Folder pane.

  • right click on email and choose 'Move to topic folder again'

Several emails can also be moved this way.

  • Hold down 'Ctrl' key and click on emails you want to move, so they become highlighted.
  • Right click on highlighted emails and choose 'Move to topic folder again'.

It is also worth noting that you can use the 'Move to' and select the folder option, if the 'Move to topic folder again' option is not available.

Instead of opening the 'Sent' folder in a new tab. Right click on Sent folder and choose 'Open in new window.' then you can select the email in the newly opened window and use drag and drop to move to the original window topic folder .

This is a method I use when I'm moving stuff about and do not need to see every folder from every account. I have quite a few folders in the 'Favourite' view, but it never gets close to needing the scroll bar.

There is the facility to create 'Favourite' folders. Right click on folder and select 'Favourite' (Unselecting a 'Favourite' folder is done the same way) Choose the main folders you are working on. then select the Favourite view. 'View' > 'Folders' > 'Favourite' OR 'Menu icon' > 'Folders' > 'Favourite'

so much easier to swap a view and see a less cluttered Folder pane.

To go back to main regular view: 'View' > 'Folders' > 'All' OR 'Menu icon' > 'Folders' > 'All'

Thanks! The "move to folder again" was something I did not realize was there. It will solve my problem just fine. Thanks again.
