Searching for text without getting wildcards - e.g. "Howe" but not "how"
Lots of old messages to search through without finding common words such as "how" and "and" instead of just "Howard" or "candles"

I suspect from your description that you're using the Global Search, which I agree is a bit lame.
There's an older search tool, accessed via ctrl+shift+f, which allows a more precise search. And because it's based on the same toolset as Message Filters, add-ons such as FiltaQuilla and Expression Search/ Gmail UI which enhance the filtering capabilities are also available in your searching.
The main drawback with the ctrl+shift+f search is that it is folder-based; it searches in the current folder only. One way of working round this is to use a Saved Search, where you have both the stronger filtering/searching rules, and the ability to select which folders to search in.

Thanks - still finds all variations, but with given word first and all other combinations afterwards - good job I knew which folder to look in!
