I'd been using TB for years through many OS updates without any catastrophes but after taking TB 38.4.0 all hell broke loose. (Note: I'm still running XP.) A compact emptied my inbox of several hundred emails... the worst problem. I've looked at other threads and I see there is a universal theme that it's my fault for not compacting often enough. Rather than throw more fuel on that fire I decided to move on... but I can't. When I do a Get Messages TB implies it's connecting with my POP server (Yahoo mail if it matters) but nothing ever comes over. Following another thread's suggestion I deleted popstate.dat but that made no difference. (popstate.dat is not being recreated.) I tried to send an email and all signs in TB suggest it was sent but it never got to it's destination. (I hate silent failures!) Shut down and restarted TB several times and the results were always the same. Then I realized something simple and obvious. TB is not asking me to give my password to connect to Yahoo when I start TB. Wazzup with that? I don't have any idea what needs to be changed or fixed! I'm almost ready to start using Outlook.

I think your anti virus is having a cow. Try restarting the operating system in safe mode with Networking. This loads only the very basics needed to start your computer while enabling an Internet connection. Click on your operating system for instructions on how to start in safe mode: Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, OSX

If safe mode for the operating system fixes the issue, there's other software in your computer that's causing problems. Possibilities include but not limited to: AV scanning, virus/malware, background downloads such as program updates.

Well it definitely seems like AV 11.1.2245 was part of the problem... another recent update. Oddly enough I already had disabled the email screen but it didn't seem to accept it until I restarted after turning it off again. So now I can fetch and send email again from TB... but I'm still annoyed that TB lost my inbox. It has lost my faith as well. I won't be bragging about it anymore
