I open an e-mail, then then to get back to the in basket I must hit the back arrow and go through all the other e-mails in the list

Once I've opened an e-mail, I can find no other way to get back to the in basket other than hit the back arrow and watch every other e-mail scroll past until it finally gets back to the in-basket. Thunderbird didn't always do this, and I don't know what started it and I don't know how to make it stop.

Stop opening messages in tabs and not closing them. To fix what you have created now, right click a tab and select Close other Tabs
