My other computer with a different email account is getting the following error when I click on "Get Messages". What's wrong and what will fix it? The emails are just piling up. All new emails are being blocked by this error.

"The RETR command did not succeed. Error retrieving a message. Mail server pop-server.gt.rr.com responded: no such message."

re :It *did* download old emails but still returned the same error at the same place in the queue.

- same error at the same place in the queue - Maybe there's an email sitting on the server which for some reason is causing a log jam.

suggest you note the last email that download ok.

Logon to webmail look for the last message that downloaded ok. The next newest after that email is possibly the one causing the issue. Move it to another folder to get it out of the Inbox. Also delete the contents of any spam folder.

In thunderbird see if Get Messages' will continue with the download.

Sounds like Road runner may have reindexed the emails on the server. That would certainly be the most common cause of the error.

  • On the toolbar > Help > Troubleshooting information
  • Click the show profile Button.
  • Close Thunderbird by clicking the X in the corner. It must not be running for the next part
  • In the File manager Windows that opened, open the mail folder.
  • Now open the Toad Runner folder. It will probably be named pop-server.gt.rr.com but it may also include a number
  • Delete the file popstate.dat
  • Close the File manager windows and restart Thunderbird.

Mail from the account should not download, but as the file that was deleted to reset the server details contains details of other mail on the server but already downloaded you will most likely receive old mail over again. Depending on your server retention settings

Thanks Matt for the info. I tried and it didn't work. It *did* download old emails but still returned the same error at the same place in the queue. Do you have any other ideas? Thanks again, Chris
