Why would my Thunderbird Inbox be flushed without notice?

I logged in this morning and my Inbox was empty except for those pending receipt notification. Not a major tragedy, about 25 emails, but I wanted to keep them and expected them to be available. I did not request the Inbox be flushed. 2nd time this week I've had Thunderbird problems.

Keep your Inbox as clean as possible, don't accumulate messages in Inbox.

I have been routinely keeping it under 40 emails. For no apparent reason, it was empty this morning but not yesterday afternoon when I logged off with about 25 emails in the Inbox.

did your ant virus delete the mail store? They have a habit of doing so.

Matt - been using the same anti-virus for over 3 years now (with regular updates!) and never seen this problem. The only time I lost mailboxes in the past was when I migrated to new hardware and upgraded to Win 8.1. Neither applies to this issue.
