Hi,

as a persuaded long-time user of Thunderbird I would like to let you know about the damage, that it just did to my e-Mails: It has just deleted all my e-mails older than 14 days - also on the server of the provider. That's a huge damage for me.

What has happened exactly:

I installed a supplementary copy of Thunderbird mobile on a second computer and updated thunderbird. Then I entered the data for my existing account as imap and about 2.200 Mails were downloaded.

I made the following settings in the jung filter: Trust Spam assasin, move junk to junk folder and delete junk older than 14 days.

Then I applied the junk filter to my inbox. First I was told that Firefox has a learning junk filter.

Then the junk filter marked every single e-mail as junk, moved it to the junk folder and deleted every mail older than 14 days.

Meanwhile I found out that the mails deleted from the junk folder were deleted on the server as well. I know there ist a possibility to choose this and it obviously was chosen.

Apart from the fact that the junk filter obviously did an extremely bad job, it did what i told it to do. Still I would have wished that I was warned befort this happened.

Maybe there ist a possibility to warn users and fix the problem in the junk filter.

I must say that I so far was very happy with the work of the junk filter.

Greetings Thomas

Chosen solution

Do you synchronise your subscribed folders? If yes... Have you compacted your Junk folder? If No.... then do Not compact the Junk and Inbox folders.

Change the Account settings > Junk Settings to not delete. Uncheck that option to stop deletes for now.

See if those messages are still there.

make hidden files and folders visible; http://kb.mozillazine.org/Show_hidden_files_and_folders

In Thunderbird Help > Troubleshooting Information click on 'show folder' button a new window opens showing profile folder name contents.

Close Thunderbird now - this is important

click on 'ImapMail ' folder click on mail account name look for 'Junk' file - no extension Open 'Junk' file using Notepad.

Each email will start with lines similar to these: example~;

  • From - Tue Oct 20 06:49:55 2015
  • X-Account-Key: account1
  • X-UIDL: ANRVfbwAAALIViUjEwJN2OMBIwc
  • X-Mozilla-Status: 0000
  • X-Mozilla-Status2: 00000000

I'm interested in the line: X-Mozilla-Status: 0000 You may have different numbers. Starting from the top of the document. Use Notepads 'Edit > Find' enter: X-Mozilla-Status:

For each X-Mozilla-Status: (not X-Mozilla-Status2:) change the four digits to say 0000

then save and close the file.

then delete the 'Junk.msf' file.

Start Thunderbird.

did this get those deleted but not compacted emails back in Junk? If yes, then train by selecting what is 'Not Junk'.

re :I installed a supplementary copy of Thunderbird mobile.

Are you talking about Thunderbird as in the desktop email client which is downloaded from here: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/all/

OR are you talking about Portable Apps Thunderbird? http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/thunderbird_portable

re :Meanwhile I found out that the mails deleted from the junk folder were deleted on the server as well. I know there ist a possibility to choose this and it obviously was chosen.

Your info states that you use imap mail account. Imap mail accounts see a remote view of folders on the server. Subscribed folders are shown in Thunderbird. Headers are downloaded and when you select to read an email, it is retrieved off the server and held in a temporary cache. There is no copy in Thunderbird, so you cannot read them offline. If you synchronise your subscribed folders then a copy of the subscribed folders is downloaded into the Thunderbird Profile folders and you can view them offline.

If you delete either via webmail or Thunderbird, it is deleted from the server and both the server and Thunderbird folders synchronise. They are in effect one and the same folder.

Only POP mail accounts can opt to leave a copy on the server if that option is selected, as it is usual to download and auto delete off the server.

re: Junk settings Everything sounds like you set it up perfectly correctly, but I can see why the initial effect of running it on the Inbox would not be expected.

I did some research on bugzilla. https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=516604

Information and explanation appears to be this. After setting up junk Controls, you would then need to train the Junk Filter as it does not know what is Junk or not Junk. Training, by manually selecting emails as Junk or not Junk will create a 'training.dat' file which is then used by the Junk controls. If you had not started to train the Junk Controls filter then on first use, it will assume everything is Junk as their is no 'training.dat' file, forcing the user to check on what is 'not junk' thus training the controls.

That is all well and good, but not helpful if you have 'delete junk emails over xx days' selected. I'm not sure what exactly the message said - I'm refering to your quote 'First I was told that Firefox has a learning junk filter.'

Support Junk Controls info:

more options

It does tell you some advise at the top of the Junk Settings section in Account Settings that training must be done prior to running the filter. But I agree that it should have specifically warned about not selecting the auto delete until it was better trained.

See image. Just below the option: 'enable adaptive junk mail controls for this account'

Thank you very much, Toad-Hall, for your help. Finally I only followed your instructions in your third mail. Luckily the X-Mozilla-Status was 0001 in all cases, so that the auto replace worked well, even on the pretty big file. The e-mails reappered in the recycle-bin but that's fine as it is easy to move them to the inbox. They have already reappeared on the server of the provider.

Thanks a lot Thomas
