hi, please reinstall firefox & thunderbird. this is a common error after performing a windows system restore because this restores some mozilla files necessary for proper operations to a prior version, but not all of them!

Yep, but that's so easy to do when you can't access Firefox, eh?!

Had to download IE first, then re-download Firefox and Mozilla.

This solved the problem, but after much weeping and gnashing of teeth!
