How do I find an e-mail file that is missing - perhaps accidentally sub-filed under another file?

Sometimes files of e-mails that I know I've had seem to disappear. I've tried "search"ing the subjects, but it only shows me the individual e-mails without (as far as I can tell) giving their location.

Chosen solution

OK, so that's the Global Search. Click on "open email as list".

Now you can add the Account and Location columns. Or right-click a message and select "Open message in containing folder".

Hi - I've been using the "search" box in the menu at the top of my Inbox (i.e., to the right of "Get Messages," "Write," etc.)

Thanks for your help!

There are usually two search boxes up there so we are no further forward. If your search results appear in a somewhat different-looking style, with filter criteria offered at the left, then you are probably using the Global Search. If so, the option to "view email as list" will put you into a more conventional Thunderbird list view.

In this list view you can right click on any of the column header buttons ("date", "subject" etc) and add columns for "account" and "location".

I'm grateful for your reply. There is actually only one search box at the top. On the left there is a "Filters" column, and at the top of the displayed e-mails, it says "Open email as list." Under the "Filters" column, there is one for "Account". But it gives only the "Local Folders" account, and the files I'm searching for are not directly under "Local Folders"; I guess they're hidden in sub-folders, and I can't figure out how to make the "Account" filter more refined/specific to show where are the files I'm looking for.
