I want is to display a shortcut to my address book

When I open Thunderbird it only displays (on the left) my email followed by a list of subfolders (Inbox, Drafts, etc). What I want is to display a shortcut to my address book. I cannot seem to get to the MAIN menu where I think I could do this.

Press F10 to temporarily display the menu bar. Select View Menu then Toolbars and select the Main Toolbar
