I am in discussion with my email service provider having experienced many of my emails being rejected by the mail server which has identified them as spam or infected - I want to wave avg over the latest rejected email but how do i find it if its buried with the others in a single file?

Right click on email and select 'Save as' choose where to save it: not in thunderbird, put it on desktop the filename should have a .eml extension click on Save.

then it will be a separate file.
