since a couple of months when I read a new message the status blinks back and forth 5-10 times to read/unread when I select another message or folder ,I tried compacting, re-indexing, deleting files, nothing worked and outlook support was useless. checked on another machine running an older tb, same problem, my other webmail account is fine

are you trying to do this on both Thunderbird and outlook at the same time?

sorry I should have written that the problem is on thunderbird when receiving mail from my outlook.com account

hey Matt, I believe that the outlook server is receiving the read status with a delay, which results in this conflict, maybe you know a way to force the messages in tb to stay as read once they've been opened?

On the toolbar > Options >Display > advanced and modify the read time

If you open in a windows not a tab, setting read time to 999 will result in mails never being automatically marked as read.

thanks for the suggestion but the problem persists. and I'm actually trying to force the messages to stay as read when I select them without reverting back to unread
