I'm getting messages that say my email is "off-line." How can I keep it "on-line"?

Recently, after a period of inactivity of Thunderbird, when I attempt to retrieve email messages, I get an error message that says I'm "off-line" and asking if I wish to resume "on-line" status. I never want to be "off-line" with my email. What do I have to do to remain in an "on-line" status?

Did your network connection that is the internet go to sleep and quietly time out in the background. You issue is with your device, not with Thunderbird.

usually have an internet connection that stays "online".

I can't decipher the response which said "usually have an internet connection that stays "online". I don't know what that means.

What does "a period of inactivity" mean? Had the computer gone into sleep or hibernation? Had your Internet connection become closed or suspended because of power saving features of your operating system?
