After automatic upgrade to Thunderbird 38.1.0 (PC, OS Windows 7) - can no longer download email from main server (Server Settings: i; map; SSL/TLS; Normal Password); Anti-virus Program: Sophos; the download is attempted with notice that newly installed Thunderbird 38.0.1 is connected to imap server, but email client continues to attempt to download, and importantly, does not ask for password to download. Old profile copied and replaced after downgrade and install of 38.0.1. Strangely, after downgrade install of 38.0.1, no new profile file was generated in the Profile folder (Users/*Name*/AppData/Roaming/Thunderbird/Profiles); too, when launch newly installed 38.0.1, the display returns to what appears to be, 38.1.0. An odd situation that I cannot solve after 3 uninstalls, installs of 38.0.1 and computer re-boots. The result appears as if 38.1.0 has never been uninstalled. I would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks.

Chosen solution

Thank you, smokva - I resolved by contacting imap server staff and an adjustment was made that seems to have corrected the problem at their end. However, my last resort if fails again to download, is to create a new profile as you suggest.

I have same problem. In the Tools -> Errors console i identified this error:

  ssl_error_weak_server_cert_key

The problem is that new version do not accept self made certificate and do not see the local computer certificates for trasted certificate.

Please fix this.

Thank you for this information. I do not have that message with version 38.0.1. The downgrade install of 38.0.1acts as if the version remains as 38.1.0 and I get different error messages. Situation is very frustrating. With 38.0.1, I receive error messages: Timestamp: 7/20/2015 7:31:40 AM Warning: Unknown property 'padding-start'. Declaration dropped. Source File: https://mozorg.cdn.mozilla.net/media/css/thunderbird-start-bundle.f3f2a61e7492.css Line: 1, Column: 2947o Source Code: /*! updated 2015-06-17 */@font-face{font-family:'Open Sans Light';src:url("/media/fonts/OpenSans-Light-webfont.804037562eab.eot?#iefix") format('embedded-pentype'),url("/media/fonts/OpenSans-Light-webfont.1c8075cacedb.woff") ---- etc.

Mozilla - please debug 38.1.0

Try and create a new profile. Do not copy/paste, just start from scratch.

Temporal solution until new update:

Preferences -> Advanced -> General -> Configuration Editor ...

Promise you will be careful! ...

Look for ssl3 at the search bar....

security.ssl3.dhe_rsa_aes_128_sha must be switched from true to false security.ssl3.dhe_rsa_aes_256_sha must be switched from true to false

Restart the application and IT WORKS!!!

Thank you, dcalarcon. The staff who maintain the imap server at my institution, performed some magic at their end that resolved the issue. Have since reinstalled version 38.1.0 and can populate Inbox on my PC. However, I will certainly retain your suggestion as to how to "fix" if the same issue again arises. Thanky you to all who responded to my problem - very much appreciated.
