Thunderbird installed 38 & now PC freezes. No response from mouse&KB. What to do? How to know there's a reply w/o email?
As explained in summary...
Thunderbird installed version 38 last night. This morning I have urgent matters to do on email.
I open Thunderbird and before it finishes downloading the emails from the server, and sometimes even before it completes password authentication for the accounts, if freezes. I've rebooted three times with zero improvement. Mouse and KB are both unresponsive although the mouse LED operates when the mouse moves and CAPS etc. indicators respond to the respective key operations, so peripherals work on their own but Mozilla Thunderbird blocks communication between them and the PC.
Now I have no access to email, and no way to know when there's a reply to this! Nice one!
So what exactly is required to make Thunderbird operate? And how will I know about this without any email?
I use Windows 7 on a PC. I use Firefox and Open Office, no further MS products.
PS: I have an account already but you do not provide a means to recover passwords, so this is my 02 account!
Chosen solution
Try to disable hardware acceleration. Tools (Alt-T) - Options - Advanced - General tab Uncheck 'Use hardware acceleration'.
What is your anti-virus software?

Mozilla does not provide phone support. This forum is the official Thunderbird support venue. Most people here are volunteers dedicating their time to help other users.

This is my second message on here. In addition: One post on hellopeter Two posts on your Facebook page THREE calls to your London office - each time a voice message! (I'm in Cape Town, that's a VERY EXPENSIVE call!)
Still no response!
Why are you so obstructive? What must I do to regain use of Thunderbird WITHOUT losing any emails?
What does it take for you to step up? What does it take for you to adopt a morally sound standpoint?

Thank you, Christ1
That seems to have solved it. I've waited a few days to check, and so far the problem does not recur.
Small point to Mozilla: Surely this sort of thing should be defaulted to "off"? Surely this should be communicated to users immediately rather than leaving unsuspecting users in a serious quagmire that induces fury and expensive calls across the globe? Probably not your sphere of influence, but hey, the observation is made.
Thanks again, you seem to have solved the problem.
Err, Brian? Did you have good results with christ1's advice?
If not, what happens if you start Thunderbird in safe mode using https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/safe+mode ??
Please post your results
Thanks, yes, that did solve it. I have no clue why anyone would set as default a setting to overload the physical hardware! Especially without telling the user that this is what was done.
But yes, it solved the problem. The symptom has not recurred in weeks.
Thank you, Christ1.
