Comcast initial download emails is slow, 10-30 seconds. Once connected, download is normal. .SOLVED: Cable replacement and relocation of a booster
When I try to get messages from my email account (Comcast) it takes about 10 to 30 seconds just to achieve a connection (the Thunderbird screen activity message says "connecting to mail comcast.net ..." during the delay). The download proceeds normally once the connection is achieved. Up to a week or so ago, connection time typically ranged from instant to a second or two. Apple's "Mail" program connects normally.
I've been using Thunderbird on an iMac for 6 years, Yosemite for the last 6 months, and Snow Leopard before that. Thunderbird is up-to-date (38.0.1), as is the Mac OS (10.10.3).
Does anyone know what may be causing the problem and how it can be fixed?

AROCH, same problem you have started for me about a week ago. Thunderbird is up-to-date (38.0.1), as is Mac OS (10.10.3). Comcast user for eight years without any Thunderbird issues.
The problem is the same in safe mode. Does anyone know what may be causing the problem and how it can be fixed?

Does it work better if you have Thunderbird started in safe mode?
The problem is the same in safe mode (just tried it).

Did this start before you updated to version 38, or after? if it started after, please reinstall version 31 and post the results. DL 31 from http://download.cdn.mozilla.net/pub/mozilla.org/thunderbird/releases/31.7.0/mac/en-US/Thunderbird%2031.7.0.dmg
Appreciate your post.
Problem started before update to 38. Update was one attempt to (unsuccessfully) resolve the hang issue. My hang time is close to 2 minutes to connect initially, after which TB works normally.
Please note: I opened a new Comcast email account in Mac Mail. It works fine. It also is IMAP, while my existing TB accounts are POP. Moreover, TB won't let me change them to IMAP. If I could, I suspect the problem would be solved. I know there is a TB POP to IMAP hack, but it seems too tough.
The problem is "solved" (or in abeyance). Comcast found that a TV problem seemingly unrelated to the email issue was caused by cable signals not strong and steady enough for their new "X1" system (much more operational data has to go back and forth between the TV box and Comcast). Cable replacement and relocation of a booster solved the TV problem and, as a result or coincidentally, the email connection delay went away.
Congratulations, Aroch. Will tell Comcast about your solution. But I doubt phone reps will buy into it. We'll see.

Changing an imap account to pop in Thunderbird is not supported. And if you do find a way to do it, you should not - that is asking for trouble. If must have a pop account, please do it by creating a new account in Thunderbird
I want to change to IMAP from POP. Not the other way as you describe.
