What is the significance of the 'star/asterick' against numbers in the 'total and size' columns in 'layout/folder pane columns' view please?

So what does it mean when there's an asterisk next to a number like this? 

Inbox (*2)

Never saw this before installing TB 38 today, but there are no subfolders of Inbox. (There are 2 unread messages in Inbox.)
