Why are all the web pages and windows in Firefox invisible?
I run Mac OS X Mavericks 10.9.5 on my iMac and recently updated Firefox to 38.0.1. Seemed to run fine a couple of days, but now Firefox no longer displays windows. (This all may or may not have happened after a restart, I can't say for sure.)
The only window that still opens in Firefox is the the Bookmarks library. Choosing a bookmark or adding pages using Command T og N yields no results. Never having a window to work with, I can't type in a url, but I've tried to access a few sites using links in emails. One was a YouTube video, and the content starts up – I can hear the sound – but no window, no video. All the invisible pages show up on the Window menu list, but choosing from the list doesn't produce a page.
The only add-on I remember installing is AdBlock, but I'm not sure and can't check. I thought I might try restoring Firefox to default settings, but how to do that when I can't see the Prefs window?
The only other symptom I've noticed is that the Apple menu bar becomes grey/less opaque while Firefox «runs». Help, anyone?

Can you start firefox in safe mode and see if the problem is still there?
You can start Firefox in Safe Mode by holding the option key while starting Firefox. When (or if) the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "Start in Safe Mode".
