Tried all the suggestions but still have warning that Thunderbird Software update failed
I have tried all the suggested solutions in the order given, even attempting to install a new version over the top but I still get the message that the Update has failed.
I don't want to uninstall Thunderbird for all the hassle of losing the address book and messages but if anyone has another way I would be delighted to give it a try. Many thanks
Andy

Thunderbird program is not installed in the same place as Thunderbird Profile with all address books, messages etc. This is done for very obvious reasons because you do not want to put profile in jeopardy.
That's why you can uninstall old Thunderbird and reinstall new Thunderbird and not effect any data in Profile. It is always a good idea to have a backup anyway, but in my case, I've never needed to use it and I have uninstalled/reinstalled for various reasons.
If you have Windows: Start > Control Panel > programs and features select Mozilla Thunderbird and click on uninstall.
Then download a newer version from here:
Choose language and OS.

Many Thanks Toad-Hall for taking the time to respond and clear that up.
I think I have now solved the issue but your comments are very much appreciated and something I never realized.
It seems the problem was evident because I had pinned the shortcut to Thunderbird to my taskbar and that was where it all went wrong.
I had followed the instructions and stopped it running inside of task manager and also tried the reboot of the computer many times but the error kept coming up.
Once I removed the shortcut from the taskbar and started it from within "Programs" the problem vanished. Its been driving me mad for days and its so good to know that people like you take the time to help.
Much appreciated.
