what is a starred e-mail?
I am having trouble getting a very simple question answered - what the heck is the "star" for in the Thunderbird e-mail program?

It is just a way to mark a message to keep track of it. You can also sort on starred messages.
There are also stars to the right of the senders email address when viewing the message. If the star is filled with color they are in one of your address books. If the star is empty you can click on it to add the sender to the address book.
