Thunderbird email messages restored but not contacts

Something went right, I don't know how I did it but I restored all of my Gmail messages into my Thunderbird account. But my contact list did not make it.

I use Carbonite for backup and that restoration did not restore my contacts.

Thunderbird talks of a "profile" but what exactly is that? Why if my messages came back, I know not how, why not contacts?
