Sharing filters
I have installed Thunderibird on my desktop and Laptop. I have IMAP accounts with server override so the mail boxes get synchronized anyway.
I tried sharing the whole storage space but I ran into problems, warning and loads of .msf files created. So, I just synched the local folders and it seems to be working fine but I want to have the filters and extensions synched as well. I don't want to sych the profile folder as I am sure I will have path conflicts and I don't want to keep exporting and importing files manually.
Which files should I synch so that both installation will always have the same filters and extensions?
Chosen solution
message filters are stores in the file MsgFilterRules,.dat is the account folder, either in mail or imapmail depending on the server type.
Tasks, along with all calendar data is stores in an SQLITE database in calendar-data folder, there is not a separate file. There is not even a separate file for each calendar.

Sharing the profile as long as you only access it from one device as a time would be a better way to go.
Once the profile is "moved" path conflicts should not occur as Thunderbird uses relative paths based on the profiles path contained in the p[profiles.ini file.
The only exception is where people have messed with the actual locations for folders in the account settings. Changing those appears to be a really bad idea if you ever need to migrate the profile to another machine.
You could also use the portableapps release of Thunderbird which runs from a portable drive. see http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/thunderbird_portable
Thank you for the response.
But I don't see how that answers my question. As I mentioned I have installed Thunderbird on two devices and would like to keep both installations in synch. I also don't want to make sure that I haven't got another copy running on another machine before starting Thunderbird on the other in which case as your response confirms could cause problems. This is why I haven't "shared profiles".
I have managed to get around the calender synchronization on two different device by synchronizing bot installations with a Google calender but I can't do the same with the Tasks.
I don't seem to be able to find a folder for the Tasks' data. The idea is to keep the data synchronized on both machines and then let the separate installations to use the same data as per their individual configuration, thereby avoiding the need to share profiles and I don't see how using a portable version can get round that.
Thanks
Ok, I will be blunt. as my earlier explanation clearly does not make it obvious enough.
There is no synchronization of tasks (there is not even a standard to use.)
There is no synchronization of other folder components such a filters or add-ons.
Sorry,
But I think you have misunderstood what I meant by synchronization. I am trying to implement a work around based on the principle of synchronizing the data and automation.
What I have done is to use a different tool to synchronize the local folders under Windows so that the data on both devices are the same. This way the archived data and those automatically places in local folders using filters are share/copied between the two devices.
I also explained how I have used a Google calender to copy appointments between the two devices.
So I am looking for the file(s) where data for the tasks are stored, as I am for those relating to the filters.
Thank you
