Can I switch between profiles without closing Thunderbird

more options

I have created a profile for me and one for my partner. The only way I can see my partner's email is to close Thunderbird and then reopen selecting her profile. A bit clunky.

A Profile can hold several mail accounts. Often people will only have the one Profile. Some people keep two Profiles with one only having Business and the other Personal as they never want the two to mix. sometimes two people share the same User Account but like to have their own Profile. Thunderbird can only view one Profile at a time. Profile Manager does not run if Thunderbird is running.

In the case of two people sharing a computer, it depends upon how your relationship works.

In my case, both myself and husband do not care who sees what as there are no secrets and no reason for keeping eg: business separate from personal. So, we have one User Account, with one Thunderbird profile containing both email addresses. All viewed in the same Folder Pane. No swapping about to other profiles etc.

Some people have no reason for keeping their own profile for their own emails other than they like it. But as they are both using the same User Account, there are no secrets, all passwords are visible and emails. It just means they have to swap between profiles.

My daughter wants her stuff private, so she has her own 'User Account' on the computer accessed by password, She therefore has her own Thunderbird Profile with her own mail accounts all contained within that User Account. So, without access to the User Account, all her emails, passwords etc are kept private.

So what you and your partner need to ascertain is this: Does your partner actually mind you accessing their private emails and passwords and vice vera?

If you or your partner would prefer their own private access to their own private correspondence and more importantly passwords, then they should have their own User Account on the computer which they access using a password. Thunderbird will run in their User Account and they can have their own Profile containing their mail accounts and all access to private emails and passwords to mail accounts.

If both you and your partner have an all sharing relationship and both of you do not care who sees what. Then you may find it so much easier to add one partners email address as a mail account in one of the Profiles. So both email addresses are in one Profile and no need to swap between Profiles. File > New > existing mail account.

If you both prefer to keep things as they are. One User Account, two Profiles each with their own mail acounts, then this add-on may help:

I've installed the add-on thanks. Keeping secrets wasn't the aim of setting up two profiles. It just that when I tried to add my partners email address Thunderbird was only giving the option of putting her folders under mine or under Local Folders whereas I wanted her folders separate to both of these.
