I doubt its a cache-problem. But under tools /clear resent history , you can clear your cache. There is also a way to clear and set the size of cache in option /advanced /network & diskspace

more important is compacting your folders.

Many thanks for your prompt reply. I have several email accounts installed on Thunderbird. I have now emptied all of the in boxes! As suggested. How now put all of those messages into a local archive, or into sub-files of the accounts in question. have also saved the KB file you offered, will read that in detail. Thank you for your help. However, I still do not know what the optimum size of the cache might be?? If there is one? I have now set it to 900mbts.
