In the past I have always had any images displayed with the email. Recently any image has failed to appear and I have not been able to restore this facility. Any suggestions, please?

From the menu bar select 'View' and check 'Display Attachments Inline'

Unfortunately, this has not made any difference - I have tried a number of times with the 'Display Attachments Inline' both checked and unchecked but there is no difference.

I am not an expert in this area, but I think I might know what is going on. There is a difference between an 'embedded' picture and an 'attached' picture.

An embedded picture has a link to the actual picture. If the link is to a site which is not accessible (such as the sender's own computer) then you will get a broken link.

An attached picture is the actual picture file (.jpg, etc.) so you can always view it. If you check 'Display Attachments Inline', then when you scroll down through the email, the attachments will show up.

So, bottom line: If the sender embeds a picture, it needs to link to a publicly accessible URL. Otherwise, it needs to be attached.

Does that help?

Thank you for that info - as the problem is recent and applies to any email from any source the failure must be in my own computer. I will continue to experiment.

At least I now understand the difference between 'attached' and 'embedded'!

As I was looking at the email which notified me of your post, there was an image with a broken link, making me think about allowing remote content. See https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/remote-content-in-messages for more information. That's probably not it, but is another consideration.

If you don't have any privacy or security concerns, could you forward one of the emails to me and I'll take a look at the source code to see if I see any problems? Send to barry@barryduggan.info

Someone sent me a message with a broken image. Here's what I have found.

There are two factors which control the display of remote images in email:

Go to File -> Offline -> Work offline. If it has a button displayed, click it (this 'unchecks' the work offline option. Images should appear.

In my case, only some images fail to appear. The source doesn't seem to give me a clue. Images that fail to appear can come from perfectly benign seeming sources, like National Geographic Society. Some of their images display, some don't. One image in particular originally displayed and then in the last day or two, poof, it was gone.

The images do appear in MS Outlook on my PC and they appear in Thunderbird on my wife's laptop (exact same AV and firewall software as my PC), so it's not a matter of AV or firewall blocking anything.

I have checked every solution suggested in this thread and none helped. I tried "show all body parts" and in my bumbling around, I chose "open with" Thunderbird and now every time I try to use show all body parts to open an attached image, it just opens a reply window with nothing in it and now "open with" doesn't even show up, just "open". I also tried an uninstall and reinstall. No help there either. In the case I mentioned above, the image that used to display has been replaced with a link, and yes, the link works, but one doesn't usually want to click on a link just to find out what's at the other end. I would rather see the image. The "show remote content" bar and button in the email does not appear in most cases. Aaarrrggghhh!

This is a frustrating problem and any help will be greatly appreciated.

I have just this week updated to 31.6.0 and found the same problem. It relates to all embedded images, not to attachments. So the "View attachments inline" option does not apply.

I'm sorry. I forgot to post this. I discovered the source of my problem was one of the settings in my Kaspersky Internet Security 2015 AV and firewall. This obviously won't help most of you, but your AV software may be a place to look even if you use something other than Kaspersky. Here's the info: Open Kaspersky, at the bottom in tiny letters, select settings, then additional, network, and then uncheck scan encrypted connections. The problem in my case was the encrypted connections. Any image that was actually a link to an encrypted web page was not displaying. Problem solved - for me, and for some of you maybe. AV software continually evolves to meet challenges and Kaspersky apparently evolved without telling me/us. I don't think NOT scanning encrypted connections is a big risk, since all the other features are functional. It's always something, eh?

In my case the problem was nothing to do with Kaspersky, although it is my AVP. The real solution was as stated by duggabe:

  • change View -> 'Message Body As' to 'Original HTML'
