Firefox Developer Edition constantly asks me to update

I am using Firefox Developer Edition 37.0a2 and every start of browser is asks me to update to version 37.0a2. Even when I click to update it is trying to connect to the server and that is only thing that I see.

I did run firefox in safe mode. The result is the same. I copied my old profile from firefox 35 to firefox 37.0a2. Is there some file with firefox version name or something else is provoking this error?

Firefox developer edition does update frequently, this s expected behaviour.

The ordinary release updates at least once per six weeks, more often than not at least twice. Beta updates several times per six week session. And Nightly often update each day. The Aurora channel used by Developer edition updates every few days. Sometimes the date but not the version may change

Check yours is up to date

  • Use Menu Button {Three bar icon) -> Help {(?) icon) ->about developer edition.
  • Now it will be moving from 37.0a2 (2015-02-15) to 37.0a2 (2015-02-16)

To see if the issue is with the profile test Developer Edition with a new additional Profile does it update ok then ?

The Aurora (aka Developer Edition) and Nightly development channels gets checkins almost every day so therefore they get updates each of those days.

The useragents used to update the build date so it helped show it was a new build but Mozilla removed this in making the UA more generic.

Is there a particular reason why you are Testing the Aurora channel builds and not using Release or Beta. For Beta channel there is six to twelve builds with nine or ten being the norm.

John99: When I create new profile it does not update too. I am using Debian and I installed Firefox by copying it to /usr/share directory(owner and group of firefox is root) are there some port numbers maybe that I have to unlock to connect with Mozilla update servers?

James: I use Developer Edition because I create webapps on mobile platforms and I want to use Valence

A random Aurora aka Developer Edition build is not really meant to be used like a Release as the Aurora and Nightly channels are for Testing.

Mozilla renamed the Aurora to Developer Edition a short while back I guess to try and get people on Nightly and other people to test Aurora more.

You need read/write permissions of Firefox folder for to update.

If they renamed Aurora to Developer Edition only to made people to use it more, they have succeeded. I think it is a good change because I was looking for something like Chrome Canary for Linux and I did not think to use Firefox Alpha. With this change it is obvious to me to choose Firefox Developer Edition. I am expecting to see in this version cutting edge tools for webdevelopers.

I think the rebranding was a good idea. I am all for increased promotion for testing pre release versions it helps users identify & report problems to. It enables users to see new features earlier.

The only disadvantage is the danger of attracting novice or naive users that are going to have problems but not report them or being unable to downgrade to a working release. The Developer Edition sidesteps the last issue as it is a separate install with its own profile, and the name will put off novices.
