Can I save an addon to disc in case it's not available in the future
Is there a way to save add-ons/Extensions to a cd so that I have it for the future should it become unavailable?

At some point that add-on may no longer exist at that location.
Only if it is no longer compatible with the newest Firefox, and only if the writer does not / will not update it. classic4 said
I can use that XPI file to bring all my old add-ons back into firefox?
Yes, and even better: just open a FF window, open your file browser to where the backups are, and just drop them into the window. That is for the add-ons only. You will still need both programs to re-install other things like settings.

Yes, that's possible:
- Visit the Add-on page on addons.mozilla.org with Internet Explorer.
- Click "Download now".
- Click "download anyway".
-> The add-on file will be saved on our disk.
Hello, pollti is correct, but if the add-on is not available any more for a future firefox version, that means you should stay in an older(unsupported, vulnerable) firefox version to be able to have your add-on/extension. :-)
thank you
Pollti, Thanks the advice, unfortunately internet explorer will not let me connect to that particular page. I’m getting the old (The page cannot be displayed and to check my connection settings). I also tried getting there thru Google – Mozilla download page – Addon link at bottom of page, but got same results. I can go anywhere else with internet explorer, just not that particular page.
Why would a person go to a webpage for installing Firefox add-ons with a different browser?
Try this link - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/ - with Firefox.
Right-click the Add to Firefox button and use Save Link As... to save the extension rather than installing it.
The-edmeister, Saving the link is not going to help if they do away with the add-on itself. I'm looking for a way to save them and burn them to a cd. Add-ons seem to come and go fairly quickly especially if they're not used by a lot of people and especially when it comes to XP add-ons. I already have one add-on that is no longer available that I'm going to loose when I reinstall XP. I don't want to make the same mistake again.
These add-ons can be a great help by backing up and restoring Firefox
FEBE (Firefox Environment Backup Extension) {web link} FEBE allows you to quickly and easily backup your Firefox extensions, history, passwords, and more. In fact, it goes beyond just backing up -- It will actually rebuild your saved files individually into installable .xpi files. It will also make backup of files that you choose.

Did you even try saving an extension in that manner?
That saves an XPI file which is the extension that you right-clicked on the Add to Firefox button. And if it didn't, you tried with one of the few extensions that shift the user to a 2nd where they are expected to read a EULA prior to installation, Then simply drag that XPI file into the Firefox browser window to install it, or use File > Open File to install it.
But with the announcement on the 10th about Extension Signing - http://blog.mozilla.org/addons/2015/02/10/extension-signing-safer-experience/ - that may not work for much longer for extensions that aren't signed. Users will have to jump thru some hoops to override that newly announced feature after Firefox 39 or 40.

Okay, that worked, but I still think it's pulling it from the add-on location. At some point that add-on may no longer exist at that location. Correct me if I'm wrong, you know more than I do.

Went to the site and read, sounds great. Let's see if I'm understanding this correctly. Once I install the FEBE add-on I can back up all my current add-ons and it saves them to an XPI file that I can download and save somewhere. Then, after I reinstall my operating system and download firefox again, I can use that XPI file to bring all my old add-ons back into firefox?
