Normally on opening thunderbird I get a box with a choice of two e-mail addresses now the second address opens automatically and I cannot get the first address. How can I recover the first address?

Did you lose the Folder Pane on the left margin?

From the Menu Bar select View-Layout-Folder Pane

If folder pane is already checked and just not visible it might have gotten pushed off the left edge of the screen.

First make sure your Thunderbird window is maximized. Move your mouse to the left edge of the window and watch for it to change to a double headed arrow. When it does left click, hold and drag to the right to uncover the folder pane.

No menu bar with View showing/ Press the alt key.
