Is there a feature to allow me to flag messages for followup?

One option: You could create a Tag called 'Follow up' and then apply that Tag to any email.

To create, edit or delete tags Menu location: Tools > Options > Display > Tags tab

You can also sort by Tags to easily identify them. Add the TAG column header then click on that column header or View > Sort by > Tags
