Did I download a fake version of firefox?

I accidentally downloaded firefox from this website:

I fear that this may have been a virus or malware since it does not originate from the official firefox page (I was up in my thoughts when downloading and didn't realize my mistake until just after finishing the download). Is there any way I can check if it was malicous or the real deal?

There is a high probability that your received some potentially unwanted programs along with that Firefox download. Don't install it and delete it. You can get the official version from Mozilla here. http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/fx/#desktop

I believe I did run the install as well (I pressed 'run' on the small bar that appeared by the bottom of the screen just after I had pressed 'download'). When I started firefox afterwards the top bar had a suspicious suspicious size and appearance. After deleting all the files, as you instructed me, (including a suspicious JavaScript-file Deep withing the avast catalogue) and downloading from the link you provided it now looks better. I guess that I should consult the avast support as well to make sure that I didn't miss anything.

I am guessing you did a search for Firefox at a search site like Google or Bing. Many times they have a Ad or two above the real search results. The long link you posted looks like it was a Ad link as unfortunately they often lead to questionable site.

Keep mozilla.org is mind for next time you want to download Firefox.
