After updating to version 31.2.0 thunderbird keeps "not responding" and generating popstate.dat folders
Help Please Software opens OK and incoming messages are downloaded, software suddenly enters a "not responding" which requires the user to close the window. The software also keeps generating popstate.dat folders with nothing in them? I have tried disabling all add-ons and plugins but makes no difference. I have rebuilt the global-messages-db.sqlite file and I have re-installed a fresh copy of 31.2.0 but still the same.
Chosen solution
I have no more suggestions other than trying a new profile.

What is your anti-virus software?
popstate.dat is a file. Are you saying you see multiple popstate.dat folders?
Thanks for your quick reply My anti-virus software is Bitdefender total security 2015. I have had both single and multiple popstate.dat up to popstate-3.dat
Try to start *Windows* in safe mode with networking enabled.

Still in Windows safe mode, start Thunderbird in safe mode.

Does the problem go away?
OK done, The "not responding" hasn't occurred again Had one popstate-1.dat added to one of my four email accounts but none in the last 40 minutes so keeping my fingers crossed.
Thanks
The "not responding" has just occurred again and another popstate-1.dat has been generated
You can try to delete popstate.dat and all clones while Thunderbird is closed. Make sure to read these instructions. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Popstate.dat#Deleting_popstate.dat
Deleted all the popstate.dat files, no emails downloaded, none on the servers. Removed all emails from all folders except for mail archived in the local folder. The "not responding" has just occurred again when I returned to the window, another popstate-1.dat has also been generated

Thanks christ1, I have re-installed 31.2.0 and built a new profile, everything working fine now
Same thing going on with me-- where do you report a bug?
This just started after years of not happening--something has been changed in Thunderbird that is causing this.
And it is annoying as it pushes folders I need to see out of view in the folder pane.
Delete them--they come right back. arghhh
Bug already exists... https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1106251
but it is not assigned...is not being worked on.
